Open Text's FirstClass Division Expands Server Platform Choice

Offers Leading Messaging and Collaboration Software for Mac OS X

Chicago, IL—August 27, 2003— Open Text™ Corporation’s (Nasdaq: OTEX, TSX: OTC) FirstClass division today announced the availability of FirstClass® Server version 7.1 for Apple Macintosh OS X.  This latest version of the company’s FirstClass Communications Platform, an integrated suite of messaging, communications and collaboration software, gives customers greater flexibility and choice by adding to the wide variety of user and server computing platforms available for FirstClass.

With this new release Open Text extends all the features and functionality of FirstClass across all supported client and server systems: Mac OS 8, OS 9 and OS X, Microsoft Windows 95, 98, NT, 2000, XP, and web browsers.

The College of Education (COE) at the University of Texas at Austin is a customer who is taking advantage of the flexibility of FirstClass. The COE has one of the largest teacher preparation programs in the U.S and has been using FirstClass for online communication and collaboration for over ten years. FirstClass enables independent teacher preparation and collaborative learning across the curriculum, as well as research into collaborative learning itself.

“Using FirstClass in Mac OS X allows us to take full advantage of the stability, speed, security and performance offered by the Apple Xserve and Xserve RAID systems,” says Michael Bell, Information Analyst and FirstClass Administrator at the University of Texas, College of Education. “We threw everything we could think of at the new system and nothing could phase it.  Even an accidental power failure caused no harm.  Once the system was rebooted, the underlying UNIX foundation kept going as if nothing had happened.   The UNIX foundation of OS X also gives us extra security and control options.”

“Apple and FirstClass have had a long history of success in a number of key vertical markets including advertising, media, publishing, and especially education. FirstClass has been available on the Macintosh platform for many years and we're very excited to now be shipping a Mac OS X version of our FirstClass server and client software," said John Myers, Vice President and General Manager of Open Text’s FirstClass division. “FirstClass support for OS X servers brings new levels of scalability, reliability, and flexibility to customers who prefer Macintosh.  We’re continuing to expand the number of server systems we support, so that customers have greater flexibility for deployment and can focus their attention on the needs of their users and their applications.”
