FirstClass Client Mac OS 9 EOL Notice

Audience

This Product Bulletin is intended for distribution to FirstClass Division's installed base Administrators, Customer Support Center team, Business Development Center team, Account Managers, and Channel Partners.

Description

This is an advance notice of the EOL (end of life) of FirstClass client products support for Apple Mac OS 9 platforms.

EOL is the discontinuance of new releases, SPs (service packs) and quality enhancements for a product. FirstClass Division policy is to provide Customer Support services for an EOL product that is not older than two major releases of a current shipping product.

Effective Date

Beginning with the GA (general availability) of FirstClass 8.2, new FirstClass client products will no longer be available for Mac OS 9 platforms. The GA date for FirstClass 8.2 is targeted for calendar Q2/2006.

At the time of issue of this bulletin, FirstClass Client 8.101 is the most current version released as a component of FirstClass 8.1.

FirstClass client products will be supported for Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux platforms in upcoming new FirstClass major releases and services packs.

FirstClass Client Products for Mac OS X

Apple announced they would stop shipping Mac OS 9 in 2002.

At that time, FirstClass Division recognized that a significant percentage of the installed base would need time to plan and budget for the migration to a Mac OS X environment. To that end, we have supported the Mac OS 9 platform for four years beyond its EOL date. FirstClass Division believes that this should have been a sufficient period to permit the majority of end users to complete the transition to Mac OS X.

Post FirstClass 8.1, Mac OS X platform clients will be developed under a Universal Binary (UB) that will run natively on both Mac Intel and PPC hardware. This focus will enable us to deliver in a timely fashion, a new generation of high performance and high quality FirstClass products for OS X systems.
