Communications Solutions Group Product Bulletin

Title: FirstClass 10 Upgrade License Distribution Announcement
Bulletin Number: 213
Version: 1.01
Date: June 10, 2009

Audience

This Product Bulletin is intended for distribution to the Communication Group's installed base Administrators, Customer Support Center team, Business Development Center team, Account Managers, and Channel Partners.

Description

FirstClass 10.0 will be made generally available (GA) in the upcoming weeks. A license will be required to upgrade to this release. This bulletin describes the FirstClass 10 license distribution process for customers who are valid members of the Maintenance and Support (M&S) program.

Instructions are also included for customers whose M&S membership is not current.

A separate bulletin will be published to announce the FirstClass 10.0 GA date.

Effective Date

The FirstClass 10 license distribution process for valid M&S customers will begin in June, 2009. Sites that have valid M&S contracts extending to at least May 31, 2009 are qualified to receive a FirstClass 10 license.

FirstClass 10 Upgrade License Distribution

FirstClass 10.0 will be our first software release to take advantage of the FirstClass Updates Service for the delivery and installation of licenses, in addition to receiving software updates.

FirstClass 10 (and later releases) upgrade, server option, and user licenses will be packaged with an installation script, and will exclusively be sent directly to the administrator’s desktop Updates container via the Updates Service. To install these licenses, simply select the new license notification and click on the Apply Update button on the Updates form. Note that these licenses are no longer delivered as attachments to an email message, and cannot be installed with the System Profile form.

To receive your FirstClass 10 upgrade license, your system must be running FirstClass 9.1 SP1 (FirstClass Server 9.1 Build 612) or later, with the Updates gateway properly configured. Your license will be delivered automatically to your server, when it is released by our Production team prior to the FirstClass 10.0 GA date. If your server’s Updates gateway schedule is not enabled, you may periodically connect manually to check if your license is available.

Administrators that are running FirstClass 9.0 or earlier systems will continue to receive any new server option or user licenses by email, until their system has been upgraded to FirstClass 9.1 SP1.

What's Next?

Only install your FirstClass 10 upgrade license after you have successfully upgraded your system to FirstClass 10.0. Only FirstClass 10 (and later) servers include license installation support from the Updates container.

About FirstClass Updates Service

FirstClass Updates Service was introduced in FirstClass 9.1 SP1. Systems that were manually upgraded to FirstClass 9.1 SP1, in advance of using the FirstClass 9.1 SP1 Core Components Upgrade Installer, may not have the Updates gateway correctly installed. If this applies to your system, please contact your regional FirstClass Customer Support center or Channel Partner to obtain an installation script and instructions to enable the Updates gateway on your server.

If you are not familiar with the operation of the Updates Service, please take the time now to review the tutorial section that follows.

FirstClass Updates is a utility that automatically connects on a daily basis to the FirstClass Updates Server (operated by the Communications Solutions Group) and downloads any new software to your FC Update Service container (formerly FC Control). It does this through a server-to-server gateway.

FirstClass Updates reduces the amount of effort to keep your FirstClass software and system up to date with the latest features and fixes, and you can manage software updates directly from the Admin desktop.

FirstClass Updates automatically creates a two-way gateway with secured passwords. While you can change these if you wish, it is not necessary, since the server automatically generates strong passwords on the first connection. FirstClass Updates then makes a daily outbound connection from your server to updates.firstclass.com on port 510 using FCP encryption.

Updating your server
In most cases, you can update your server in just a few seconds with zero downtime.

To apply changes to store content and licenses:
1. Open the FC Update Service container on the administrator Desktop.
2. Select the document corresponding to the desired upgrade.
3. Click Apply Update.
4. Confirm that the upgrade was successful.

To apply executables:
1. Open the FC Update Service container on the administrator Desktop.
2. Open the object and download the executable.
3. Confirm that the upgrade was successful.

Changing gateway settings
As a default, the gateway is set up to connect to the FirstClass Updates Server each day between 4:00 AM and 5:00 AM local time. As the administrator, you can change this to suit the needs of your organization.

You also have the ability to change the password, although it is not necessary. A password generator automatically creates a password at both sites on the next connection if the password field is blank, or updates one site if a password is entered at the other site.

Disabling updates
Although we highly recommend using the FirstClass Updates facility, if you wish to stop updates, disable the schedule on the Scheduling tab of the gateway. This will still allow you to connect manually or restore the schedule in the future.

Caution
We do not recommend deleting the gateway. Deleting the gateway will make it difficult to re-enable the facility in the future. Disable it instead using the method described above.
