New Product Features and Enhancements

The new features and fixes (since FirstClass 10.0 Server SP2 Build 883 and Internet Services SP4 Build 10.017) are listed in this section.

A. FirstClass Server

General
  • A new server icon has been introduced.
  • The default number of sessions included with FirstClass has been increased from 250 to 500. For sites that require concurrencies beyond 500 users, a Hi-Cap (500-2,500) or VLS (> 2,500) license is required.
  • Session billing is now determined by unique user account logins rather than by total user logins.  As an example, a user simultaneously logged into his account via his desktop client and his mobile client counts as only one session.
  • Session billing also now no longer counts logged in gateway accounts. These two changes in session billing further improve the default server concurrency without the need for additional licensing for many expanding sites.
  • The Network sessions setting in the previous Systems Tools form is no longer required, and has been removed. No network sessions are created at startup time; they are now allocated on demand during a login if the current session capacity is below the required network session (connection) count.
  • The FirstClass Notifier limit setting in the previous System Profile form is no longer required, and has been removed. The notification table now grows dynamically so that a specific upper limit no longer needs to be specified.
  • The notification table is now saved to disk and reloaded at startup.  Notifications will continue to function across server restarts.
  • An administrator who has opened a user’s desktop no longer prevents that user from getting correct permissions in subcontainers from their Desktop.
  • Maintenance users or better are now able to login while logins are disabled.

Licensing
  • Support has been added for the new FirstClass Suite license, which defines a site as a FirstClass installation. The Suite license permits full use of Social Workplace, and select future FirstClass architecture applications. All new and existing FirstClass sites with valid M&S are entitled to it.
  • Implemented Privilege Group (User Group) Licensing mechanism.

Group membership is applied and any user with the check box set will request a single instance of that license.

Social Workplace
  • Added Public container checkbox to Container Template form. This should be checked for the standard group Public Community.
  • Added support for a Pulse container.
  • The server supports adding pulse feed entries for new public communities as well as pulse feed updates for invitations to public communities.
  • Generates status feed (Pulse) updates for a new user logging in for the first time.
  • Generates status feed (Pulse) updates for a user posting a new blog entry.
  • Implemented a new (thread based) expiry process for Social Workplace communities and BLOGs.
  • URIs generated for use in email notifications as part of Social Workplace are now properly encoded.
  • Social Workplace items no longer sent to older clients.

Group Administration
  • Improved the OU pop up list to show a user's OU groups first:

26102010_33916_2.png

  • Mobile client is now an access checkbox split apart from the FirstClass client as a privilege on User Groups and the User Information Form. When the server starts the first time, it will copy the state of the FirstClass client checkbox to the Mobile client field so that server behavior remains unchanged in the absence of administrator intervention.

  • Three new time zones have been added - Almaty, Bishkek, and Nuuk.
  • Expanded group names (from 32 to 63) in the SysIDTable.
  • Fixed problems pressing buttons on group forms that prevented the button implementation from finding the correct group data when the name was longer than 31 bytes. Fixes 1048s opening group models, and similar problems (also likely problems opening rules and resources for such groups, etc).

Calendar
  • Rename personal calendar aliases to use the owner's name.
  • When subscribing someone to your calendar the alias will go directly into their calendar, not onto their desktop.

FirstClass Scripting (Batch Admin)
  • Retrieval of passwords may now be optionally permanently disabled.  Activation is done through the FirstClass Scripting command:
ACTIVATE SECUREPASSWORDS +FINAL

  • Added the ability populate a Resume for a group using the PUT command
        PUT ABOUT <GroupName> <FieldID> <FieldType> <FieldValue>...

        Example
        PUT ABOUT "Web Services" 1000 14 1978 1001 0 "Testing 1-2-3"

  • Added Services notification when a directory changed has been made using the PGADD and PGDEL commands.
  • Fix to import attachments with names longer than 31 characters.

Core Services
  • Session Monitor only updates sessions with changes rather than filling the entire list.  A side effect of this is that empty sessions at the time of opening the monitor are not shown.
  • The Session Monitor window now includes IP address data.
  • The server now tracks the peak usage for user sessions and remote user sessions, and includes these on the Users tab of the Server Monitor.

  • Maximum indexing word length has been significantly extended.
  • General system performance improvements.
  • [Windows] Console to file is now enabled by default (like it already was on the other two platforms)
  • [Windows] Improved behavior as a Windows service, particularly with respect to providing progress signals to the OS after being asked to terminate.

Crash Reporting
  • [Windows] DMP files will now be generated without requiring INI option interference. By default it generates a very small dump with a compact representation of the stack and any heap pages directly referenced by addresses on the stack. INI option overrides continue to be respected for both whether to write a DMP file and the amount of data to include in it.
  • [OS X and Linux] A small .crs file will be generated during a crash with minimal information (enough to determine the location of the core file, etc). It will be cleaned up at startup if the system is opted into the reporting scheme described below.
At startup, if the administrator has opted into the crash reporting system, a check is made for crash logs. Logs will be zipped and  attached to a message sent to our internal developer's conference on FCOL by way of the Update Server.

For privacy reasons, this technology is opt-in. The updated Server Tools form contains these new checkboxes:

Indexed Search
  • Indexed search disabled for Archive (aka Library) and VLS licensed servers.
  • Added the ability to index a group resume and retrieve a hit during the search phase.
  • Search drops back to old-style search if the index cannot handle the query type or terms.
  • Search more aggressive about removing items from the index that were not encountered during the audit.
  • Fix for flagging issue when the Trash Can is used to search for deleted items.
  • Search crash fixed.

Audit
  • Fix to avoid expiring messages from the IS mailbox during a single container audit.
  • Audit (and other similar) issues relating from changes to how sessions are allocated.
  • Better reporting when adjusting a user's unread tracking.
  • Suppress Service audits at shut down time.
  • Remove mailbox from SysIDTable diagnostic message now includes FID of record being removed.
  • Fixed recycle check to correctly identify an account's mailbox.
  • Fixed crash during audit as the server iterates through files in a folder looking for subdirectories.

Other Fixes and Enhancements
  • Change to not update the header version when updating new fields, which previously caused existing attachment names to be incorrectly translated.
  • In previous servers, at login time, the server would auto-open the mailbox for any logins by an SMTP platform, or by everything except the IS account, or other logins using IS platforms.  This has been changed to also exclude auto-opening the mailbox for Content Services platform logins.
  • Fix for MTA re-queue and hold problem, where entries may be lost from the list.
  • Fix for gateways that need Warn Logoff notifications.  Mailbox deletions are now tracked even when the mailbox is not held open.  Mini-audits should be triggered correctly when a mailbox-based gateway logs off, or when the number of deleted items exceeds the threshold.  Only the mailbox-based session should trigger this.
  • New intertask notification system that allows user sessions to be notified when subobjects change.  For performance reasons, this is currently disabled on the desktop (may be enabled in a future release but for now the desktop still has a 2 minute "tinkle").
  • Fixed a problem that could have resulted in a re-queued messages getting archived again, or even possibly having a portion or all of the recipients processed again.
  • The server now enforces the appropriate sharing related privileges when trying to add a subscriber. Currently only called when trying to insert a new subscriber.
  • Fixed crash for an attempting to send a message error case.
  • Change to properly recognize the SingleMatch case when the potential of more records in subsequent pages is verified.
  • Subject details in the stats log when Message Delivery is on previously looked broken when the subject is in Japanese characters.
  • Fixed problems with extended characters at the truncation point. Specifically, this fixes Japanese mojibake char sets in the window title when pressing Permissions button on conf groups.
  • Fixed window titles and subjects for some objects that could support longer than 31-byte names getting truncated and/or Japanese mojibake sets at 31-characters.
  •  [Linux] Fixed problems calculating the memory statistics that could lead to inflated values, resulting in inappropriate memory engineering at startup time.  May resolve some cases where applications were able to exhaust all available memory (seen in IS).
  • [Linux and OSX] Simplified the obtaining of memory statistics, removing most error cases.

B. Internet Services

General
  • A new Internet Services icon has been introduced.
  • Added support for user.headermatch files.
  • Added a new auth field appplatformtype, which can be used to specify the FCP sub-platform.
  • Added support for the new calendar repeat fields.
  • Various changes to reflect calendar changes that were made in FirstClass 11 Client.
  • Properly implemented support for the rules.SMTPDebug document. Added configuration output for mail rules. Translate any non-UTF8 characters in the AltBody.
  • Added the ability to see bad RCPT TO addresses in mail rules. Also add the predefined $LastSMTPError variable which returns the last SMTP protocol error. Rejected relay recipients set this variable to 530, for example.
  • Fixed a problem with trailing 0xfa characters if the text/html part had unacceptable parse error(s) in inbound SMTP.
  • Fix for Japanese mojibake in inbound SMTP message from Hotmail (up to an 8K line length).
  • The POP3 server now supports sending plain text & html output even for AltBody content.  This is configurable via the Advanced Mail form.
  • IMAP changes similar to those made in POP3 to support text/plain where appropriate.
  • Added support for the IMAP UNSELECT extension.
  • Fixed retrieval of unsent messages, used by the IMAP FETCH command.
  • HTTP: Added several new canned objtype/subtype filters for list views (filestorage, typedfolders, regularfolders, typedconferences, regularconferences), both to URL params and in the HeaderMatch DAV filter options.
  • HTTP: Changed the default DAV filter to files, subtypeless conferences and folders, and file storage folders.
  • HTTP: Added two new HeaderMatch options: containerview and defaultsortgroup.
  • HTTP: Added a new formatting argument to <X-FC-RESOURCE>, "LOCATION" which will output the location where IS is pulling a given resource from in the form "<where the resource lives>:<name of resource file>".  This can be used to, among other things, determine what language file is in use for a given resource.
  • HTTP: Added some new HeaderMatch options to set the default HTML body input format and to auto-set the "KeepNames" flag for template sets that use modern nameval.
  • HTTP: Fixed several problems when using unique session URLs.
  • Added the ability to override the default HTTP timeout on a per hit basis using HeaderMatch: timeout = <minutes>. <minutes> is limited to values of 1 to 60 inclusive. Default value is 1 minute.
  • Added some code to HTTPMail to convert documents with legacy charsets and empty bodies to Unicode on save.
  • Added antivirus scanning to HTTP uploads. Uses the Scan Engine configuration from the Advanced Mail/Antivirus configuration, plus a new checkbox in the Advanced Web & File/HTTP/Access configuration.
  • Added support in the LDAP server for returning the UserID instead of the ClientID for the UID attribute. Note that returning the UserID will have a noticeable negative effect on performance. The Advanced Directory form has been updated for selecting this.
  • Updated session monitor/task monitor schema code.
  • Force Filter documents to be reloaded when the gateway connection fails.
  • Date printing in log lines has been corrected.

HeaderMatch Document 11.0 R2
  • Some changes for use with the Social Workplace Templates
  • Various changes to support the 1.1 version of the BFAPI
  • Turns validation keys off by default, in order to ease administrative setup requirements for traditional FirstClass customers when FirstClass 11 rolls out, particularly in FirstClass Suite environments using WebDAV and BlackBerry clients.

MIME Types Document 10.1 R2
  • Updates and changes in conjunction with 10.1 and 11.0 IS.
  • Additional support added for Social Workplace.

Standard Web Client 11.0 R3
  • Fixed minor script errors.
  • Fixed issues when saving properties for images in tree view.
  • Fixed Advanced searching sorting/grouping.
  • Fixed problems with "Create mail to" button in contacts & mail lists when VKeys enabled.
  • Fixed script errors in enhanced mode search from tree view when selecting items.
  • Fixed "New" calendar event form repeat types that was not working.
  • Fixed various calendar related issues.
